The Indian Revenue Service (IRS) Customs and
Excise is a government agency responsible for administering and enforcing the
indirect tax laws in India, which include customs duty, excise duty, and
service tax. The officers of the IRS Customs and Excise are responsible for various
tasks such as regulating trade, preventing smuggling, and collecting indirect
taxes.
The training structure for the IRS Customs and
Excise officers consists of the following:
Foundation Course: This is a three-month
training program conducted at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of
Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie. The course focuses on building a
foundation of knowledge and skills in various areas such as law, economics,
finance, and management.
Professional Training: After completing the
foundation course, the officers are posted to various training institutes
across the country for a period of 15 months. During this period, they undergo
specialized training in areas such as customs laws, excise laws, and service
tax laws.
On-the-job Training: After completing the
professional training, the officers are posted to various field offices across
the country. Here, they undergo on-the-job training under the guidance of experienced
officers.
The training academy for Indian Revenue Service
officers is the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA)
in Mussoorie. This academy is responsible for conducting the foundation course
for all civil servants, including IRS Customs and Excise officers.
Additionally, there are specialized training institutes such as the National
Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes, and Narcotics (NACIN) that provide training
to IRS Customs and Excise officers on specialized subjects.
